How to solder amateur jewelry

Update: The "special metal holder" is not very special at all. It's two wooded parallel clamps, one holding the other. The vertical one is holding a pair of vice grips. You can find them at any home improvement store.

The solder in the video is lead-free silver solder. The same kind used to solder copper pipes for potable water.

Unless your are a dedicated jeweler you probably can't justify the cost of purchasing a proper soldering set up ( http://www.riogrande.com/Product/Smith-Complete-Little-Torch-Acetylene---Oxygen-System/500030?Pos=11 ).

This is the same kind of soldering used on the copper pipes in your house. It works well for amateur jewelry projects. You can see some examples of my work using this method here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBbNrASkU0k

Keep in mind these projects use non-precious metals (copper, nickel, steel, brass, bronze). While you could still use this method for soldering precious metals, you'll never see it. Soldering gold and silver uses a much hotter torch and different solder.

One last thing you can not use this method to solder aluminum, stainless steel, or titanium.
