Nakasendo Road, Pt. 1

In 1602, the Shogun decided they would consolidate their power over the empire by connecting Kyoto to Tokyo, then known as Edo. They built a single passage through the mountains by connecting existing roads known as the Eastern Passage, and were able to show power, collect taxes, and move troops freely throughout the region. Called the Nakasendo Road, it was a game-changer in the power structure of ancient Japan. today, it's possible to hike that ancient highway and experience what that journey might have been like.
