Here's a more detailed look:

Lake Cahuilla:

The Salton Basin, which is now the site of the Salton Sea, has a history of hosting intermittent lakes, including Lake Cahuilla, which formed when the Colorado River's natural flow into the Gulf of California was disrupted, causing it to spill into the basin.

Lake Cahuilla filled and dried multiple times over the centuries, with the last major filling occurring around 1733.

It was a much larger lake than the current Salton Sea, covering a significant area including parts of the Coachella, Imperial, and Mexicali valleys.

The lake was an important food source for Indigenous people and played a role in the region's history and geology.

The Colorado River's Natural Flooding:

Before the Colorado River was dammed and controlled, it was a free-flowing river that often changed course and flooded, sometimes spilling into the Salton Basin.

These floods created intermittent lakes like Lake Cahuilla, which would then dry up as the river's course shifted back towards the Gulf of California.
