Imagine you are searching for something in your bag. As your fingers delve into the depths of the bag, they brush against other objects. However, when your fingers finally touch the bottom of the bag, you begin to realise that the thing you are looking for isn't there. Your search has reached a dead end. Further progress or advancement is no longer possible. It has reached a cul-de-sac.
The literal meaning of “cul-de-sac” is “bottom of the bag”. We can use it to refer to a road, passage, etc. that is closed at one end. "The neighbourhood has many cul-de-sacs. That's why it's safe for the kids to play outside.” We can also use it to refer to a situation where further progress is no longer possible. For example, “He thought he had reached a cul-de-sac with his job, so he decided to explore other opportunities.” “Their discussion reached a cul-de-sac when neither of them agreed on the plan.”
