My drum solo while touring with Maynard Ferguson

I recently had some broadcast video footage shared with me from a concert I played with Maynard Ferguson in Lithuania way back in 2003.

It was pretty fun to see this footage, because when I was in Maynard's band it was a very different era: no smartphones, no social media, and camera recording was definitely not allowed (We would often see the tour manager run out in the audience to grab people cameras!). So other than memories, I don't have recordings or footage from my time in the band.

However, I did have a strong memory of this particular concert. The crowd was just so wonderful, warm, and supportive, and you can really feel it! I definitely remember feeling it from the stage during the show, and although we always had amazing audiences, It was rare we played to this large and supportive a crowd.

Looking back, I was extremely fortunate to have this musical opportunity at a young age. It's very rare a drummer gets to play such a long solo, but I was given a solo every single gig, and while it was very challenging in the beginning I can see now that it really forced me to develop as a performer and improviser. I had decent nights and rough nights, and although I'm not quite sure where this solo lies on the spectrum (it was just one more night in a long tour) it's fun to watch it now almost 20 years later.
