La Sacra di San Michele è un’antichissima abbazia costruita tra il 983 e il 987 sulla cima del monte Pirchiriano, a 40 km da Torino. Il luogo ha ispirato lo scrittore Umberto Eco per il best-seller Il nome della Rosa.
Dall’alto dei suoi torrioni si possono ammirare il capoluogo piemontese e un panorama mozzafiato della Val di Susa. All’interno della Chiesa principale della Sacra, risalente al XII secolo, sono sepolti membri della famiglia reale di Casa Savoia.
Il Santuario romanico-gotico che accoglie oggi il visitatore alla sommità del monte Pirchiriano venne realizzato e modificato nel corso di più secoli. Vi appaiono tre generi di architettura: romanico nella parte absidale, orientata verso il punto esatto in cui sorge il sole il giorno della festività di San Michele (29 settembre), nella prima arcata e relative finestre e colonne; romanico di transizione nelle due successive arcate con pilastri a fascio e archi acuti, e uno gotico di scuola piacentina nella decorazione del finestrone dell’abside centrale e nelle due finestre delle navate minori.
L’inizio dei lavori di costruzione della chiesa è di difficile datazione, ma si suppone che l’avvio sia stato commissionato dall’abate Stefano (1148 e il 1170).

La Torre della Bell’Alda è una torre a strapiombo sul precipizio del monte al termine del muraglione perimetrale delle Rovine e trae il suo nome dall’omonima protagonista della leggenda.
Alda, fanciulla paesana, arriva alla Sacra per pregare contro i mali della guerra, ma, sorpresa dai soldati nemici, non avendo altra via di scampo si getta nel burrone invocando l’aiuto di San Michele e della Vergine. Si salva e rimane illesa in fondo al precipizio.
Purtroppo questo favore celeste viene da lei male usato: per vanità e denaro s’immagina di poter fare un secondo salto e agli increduli suoi compaesani si offre di ripetere il volo, ma trova orribile morte dove prima aveva trovato l’inatteso scampo.

Il parco naturale dei Laghi di Avigliana (Ente di gestione Aree Protette Alpi Cozie ) è costituito da tre ecosistemi: i due laghi, la palude dei Mareschi e le colline moreniche. I laghi sono gli unici sopravvissuti tra quelli formatisi in seguito alle due ultime grandi glaciazioni pleistoceniche in Valle di Susa.

From the top of its towers you can admire the Piedmontese capital and a breathtaking view of the Val di Susa. Inside the main church of the Sacra, dating back to the twelfth century, members of the royal family of the House of Savoy are buried.
The Romanesque-Gothic sanctuary that today welcomes the visitor at the top of Mount Pirchiriano was built and modified over the course of several centuries. There are three kinds of architecture: Romanesque in the apse, oriented towards the exact point where the sun rises on the feast day of San Michele (29 September), in the first arch and relative windows and columns; Transitional Romanesque in the two successive arches with beam pillars and pointed arches, and a Gothic one from the Piacenza school in the decoration of the large window in the central apse and in the two windows of the minor aisles.
The beginning of the construction of the church is difficult to date, but it is assumed that the start was commissioned by Abbot Stefano (1148 and 1170).
The Torre della Bell’Alda is a tower overlooking the precipice of the mountain at the end of the perimeter wall of the Ruins and takes its name from the legendary protagonist of the same name.
Alda, a village girl, arrives at the Sacra to pray against the evils of war, but, surprised by the enemy soldiers, having no other way out, she throws herself into the ravine invoking the help of St. Michael and the Virgin. She is saved and remains unharmed at the bottom of the precipice.
Unfortunately, this celestial favor is misused by her: out of vanity and money she imagines being able to make a second jump and to her incredulous fellow villagers she offers to repeat the flight, but she finds horrible death where she had previously found the unexpected escape.

The natural park of the Avigliana Lakes (Cozie Alps Protected Areas Management Body) is made up of three ecosystems: the two lakes, the marsh of the Mareschi and the morainic hills. The lakes are the only survivors among those formed following the last two great Pleistocene glaciations in the Susa Valley.
