Point-Blank at Omaha: The Destroyers Who Risked It All on D-Day”

On June 6, 1944—D-Day—American troops were pinned down on Omaha Beach under relentless fire from German pillboxes. With the assault at risk of failure, U.S. Navy destroyers like USS Frankford (DD-497) made a daring decision: they closed in to dangerously shallow water, sometimes within 1,000 yards of the shore, to fire directly at enemy defenses.

From near point-blank range, these ships unleashed precise naval gunfire, targeting bunkers, machine gun nests, and fortified positions that had stalled the invasion. Ignoring mines, obstacles, and coastal artillery, their bold action helped turn the tide—giving soldiers the chance to break through the beach defenses.

This short animated film brings that moment to life—showing how courage, quick thinking, and raw firepower helped change the course of history at Omaha Beach.
