Hundreds of Strangers Attended a WWII Veteran’s Funeral — So He Wouldn’t Be Alone #truestory

In 2013, RAF veteran Harold Jellicoe Percival, who had served during World War II, passed away at the age of 99 in a nursing home in Lancashire, England. He had never married, had no children, and no close relatives who could attend his funeral.

Staff at the home and a local funeral director made a small request in a local newspaper: if anyone could come to honor a man who once served his country, they would be welcome.

What happened next was extraordinary. On the day of the funeral, hundreds of people arrived — veterans in uniform, young families, and complete strangers. They filled the chapel, lined the roads, and stood in silence to pay tribute to a man they’d never met.

One local resident said, “He had no family — but today, he did.”

That day, the world was reminded that kindness and respect can make sure no hero is ever forgotten.
