The Original Original! "The Planets" rec. 1926, restored, Holst conducting Holst / London SO
Gustav Holst: "The Planets" (1914-16)
(He changed his name from von Holst, eleven days before the first [private] performance of the work, fearing it could have been interpreted as German)
There's no law that says you'd need to endure that traditional noise and crackle when listening to old recordings!
We deliver the original sound at no extra cost to you!
The Composer conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, 1926. It can't get any more authentic than this! This was the 4th (and last) time Holst was recording this with the LSO. The previous versions (apparently partial) in 1922, -23, and -25 had been acoustic unamplified 'horn' recordings, this was the first one employing electronic amplification by vacuum tubes and electrically operated grooving.
Naturally this is a historically valuable recording, but the limitations of the technology are evident mostly in the odd balance of the orchestral instruments, there probably was a very limited number of mics used.
This one is also among the fastest Planets recordings ever, it almost swings.
