Don't use Electronic Shutter with a Canon EOS R5 - Sports Photography Autofocus Test - Football

I wanted to test out the auto focus capabilities of the new mirrorless camera with a real world test featuring the EF 400mm f2.8 IS II USM.

I actually think the AF in this camera works quite well. And I have owned a 1, 1n, 1VHS, 1D, 1D II, 1D III, 1DX2 and every 5D camera, and I’ve used many of them to shoot sports at a very high level.

I think I may have failed to properly communicate my approach for this video and what I was doing. This has become clear to me as I have seen other people make videos on this topic, claiming almost everything is sharp, when they're shooting easy to focus subjects, like children tossing a football or people running, and then not sharing statistics, but their general impressions.

The easiest thing for any camera to do, is track a person running at average speed or running at high speed in a straight line. When I shot these types of scenarios with the camera, maybe 10% of the images were out of focus, which is inline with most reports. But one of the hardest things to focus is to follow a tightly framed subject that is running at full speed, changing direction, jumping vertically and horizontally at the same time, while catching a football, often times with their hands between their face and your camera, plus a ball.

So the reason why I focused on the wide receivers and not the quarterbacks, is because the camera’s AF nailed the quarterbacks and I wanted to know how the camera would perform in an extreme situation.

As for the electronic shutter, my main conclusion — I would much rather have 12 frames without distortion then risk blowing the shot because rolling shutter has caused something in my frame to look highly distorted.

Also after shooting someone in my studio with a helmet on, I realized the camera had trouble finding their face both waist up and chest up, and it could never find the subjects eyes. I would expect that is because the eye to sphere ratio is off and the persons nose and mouth are obstructed. So I don't think face and eye tracking is going to work for football, but this will require more testing and this could have had an affect on my results.

My evaluation is valid for how the camera will perform in the mods I was using, shooting the player position in the sport I was shooting and in many similar situations. The camera is going to preform a lot better when shooting many sports and other positions.
