US to Cut Air and Naval Assets Deployed for NATO Operations in Europe
The United States is planning a significant reduction in the air and naval assets it makes available for NATO operations in Europe, a move that could reshape the alliance’s military posture and place greater responsibility on European members for regional defense. The proposed changes are part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration to encourage NATO allies to assume a larger share of the burden for collective security.

According to reports, Washington intends to reduce the number of fighter aircraft assigned to NATO missions, cutting the contingent of F-16 and F-15E jets from roughly 150 to about 100. Maritime reconnaissance aircraft are also expected to be reduced, while aerial refueling tankers previously allocated to European operations could be withdrawn entirely. In addition, the United States is reportedly preparing to redeploy an aircraft carrier, a missile-capable submarine, several warships, and one of the bomber groups currently dedicated to European defense missions.

Military analysts say the reductions could affect NATO’s ability to conduct long-range strike missions, maritime surveillance, and submarine-tracking operations, particularly in areas bordering Russia and the Arctic. European governments have expressed concern about the speed and scale of the proposed changes, especially as the war in Ukraine continues to shape the continent’s security environment.

NATO officials, however, have sought to reassure member states that the alliance remains capable of meeting its defense commitments. Alliance representatives argue that European nations and Canada have substantially increased defense spending in recent years and are expanding their own military capabilities to compensate for a reduced U.S. role. NATO has described the shift as part of a long-term effort to create a more balanced and sustainable distribution of responsibilities among allies.

The proposed reductions follow repeated calls from President Donald Trump for European governments to invest more heavily in defense and reduce their reliance on American military support. While the United States is expected to remain NATO’s most powerful member, the changes signal a continuing evolution in transatlantic security relations and could mark one of the most significant adjustments to the alliance’s force structure in decades.
