A well in the city
How a well is revived with rainwater and the relationship of a man and his well. He remembers the well digger -Arumugam- with fondness. Arumugam located the well as per Vaastu in the North East Corner and dug it fully himself...all of 30 feet deep. There was water in the early 80's and the house was built with the well water. Over time in the nieghbourhood where there were many wells the water dried up. Most people closed their wells but not him. Then he read about rainwater harvesting and connected his rooftop to the well through a blue drum filter filled with sand. The well sprung back to life and gives him all the water that he needs for the year. He does not need the utility water at all.
He has placed a piece of wood from the Gooseberry plant, traditionally regarded as good for well water. In the rainy season he makes it a point to check whether the rainwater harvesting is working and how much the water has risen. A float that he designed gives him the indication.
If many more people could follow his example there should not be a water shortage in Bangalore city at all. Will we become water wise ?
