Description: Voices of VR Podcast host Kent Bye does a survey of Metaverse definitions and synthesizes them into an sensemaking framework to compare different approaches. He then elaborates on the experience economy & experiential design frameworks to understand the underlying affordances of spatial computing. Then turning the challenging topic of XR privacy, uses that map out different human rights and contextual approaches to XR Ethics. Finally, he breaks down how the major XR companies like Meta are setting the tone for XR ethics with concerning implications of potentially skewed demographics by exclusively focusing on gaming. He critiques Meta's Responsible Innovation framework as a deviation from best practices of RI, and recounts some challenges to privacy, the tech pacing gap, and regulation. It's a unique moment to be developing XR Ethical frameworks that could help shape the trajectory of the overall XR industry, and this talk will provide an overview of some of the landscape while also helping make sense of how to understand where the Metaverse is at and where it's going.
