ANA + BETÂNIA // SOLO EXHIBITION // UNDERDOGS CAPSULE // 2020
“Wild Fire” – a solo exhibition by Ana + Betânia at the
Underdogs Capsule.
-
Ana + Betânia are Ana Cruz and Maria de Betânia. Currently based in Caldas da Rainha, a city known for its ceramics production both in industry and traditional handcraft, their work is frequently influenced by Portuguese popular ceramics, but the concepts and subjects they approach are far from traditional. The duo appropriates a surreal, humorous language, deconstructing the human body in order to build visual metaphors that appeal both to tenderness and delicateness in a perverse, twisted way.
In “Wild Fire”, this duo has created a striking and impactful installation of ceramic sculptures, conceived especially for this presentation at Underdogs Capsule. Taking on themes concerning the delicate and complex relationship between human beings, nature and machines, they offer important insight into the distorted dynamics of violence and domination through materials and techniques that are at once extremely delicate and coarsely harsh.
