Tiny Tour | Olite Spain | A medieval city in Navarra with Roman origin | 2019 Oct
Olite castle episode: https://youtu.be/YbjY6YG5VRA
Olite is a municipality and a Spanish city of the Navarra Foral Community. It is about 42 km from the capital of the community, Pamplona. Olite is located in the middle area of Navarra, on the banks of the Zidacos river.
From the archaeological remains it is known that in Roman imperial times (1st century AD), a strong walled belt defended a small hill on which the medieval town would later be founded. In addition, around the current urban nucleus, remains of Roman villas have been found.
The first written reference to Olite: according to the aforementioned bishop of Seville, the Gothic king Suintila founded the city of Oligicus or Ologite in 621 and re-fortified it to face the Basques.
It is the capital or head of the merindad of its name , created by Carlos III of Navarra in 1407. Felipe IV granted it the title of city in 1630. From its brilliant moments in the 15th century to the 19th century, Olite experiences a political eclipse and a strong demographic decline.
