Mahabharat ep3: King Shantanu wants to marry .. but AT WHAT COST?

Shantanu didn’t lose his future to a curse. He lost it to a sentence he said too quickly.

She walked out of the river and named her terms.. never question me, or I leave. He said yes. Not because he’d thought it through. Because he was terrified she’d vanish if he didn’t.

The oldest mistake in human history: making a 30-year promise during a 30-second feeling.
The cofounder deal signed on a napkin. The proposal made in euphoria. The job accepted because the offer felt good to open.
The feeling lasts thirty seconds. The contract lasts thirty years.
The question Shantanu never asked: you want this, but at what cost?

He paid in the right to be curious about his own wife. In the moment it sounded romantic. In practice, it’s slow self-erasure. You can’t build intimacy with someone you’re forbidden from knowing.

You want the job at the cost of watching your kids grow up. You want the partner at the cost of being yourself around them. You want the exit at the cost of every relationship that existed before.
The wanting isn’t the problem. The problem is when wanting gets so loud it stops feeling like a choice and starts feeling like an obligation.

Shantanu said yes because he was scared she’d disappear. He made the biggest decision of his life from fear, believing it was love.
The deepest question isn’t “do I want this?”
It’s “would I still want this if I weren’t afraid of losing it?”
Ask it slowly. Ask it before you sign. The version of you that exists after the promise isn’t the same one who made it and that future self deserved to be consulted.
