Tel Aviv Derby Abandoned After Fans Launch Fireworks and Smoke Bombs

A football derby in the Israeli Premier League was canceled due to “public disorder and violent riots” on Sunday, October 19.

Hapoel Tel Aviv was set to host Maccabi Tel Aviv at Bloomfield Stadium, the teams’ shared home ground. The unrest began with fans hurling flares, smoke bombs and fireworks onto the field and towards other attendees.

More than 30,000 spectators were forced to evacuate the stadium and the match was canceled. In a statement, a police spokesperson said that what happened was “not a football game,” but “a serious disorder and violence.”
