Epsom Salts for Roses

There are a few stories going around about epsom salts and roses. The mythology attributes epsom salts properties of deterring pests, improving basal breaks, helping with transplants/rooting - and promoting healthier leaves and flowers. These stories appear to be unsupported by science. Here's a WSU article on the folklore:

If your roses are deficient in magnesium, epsom salts can be useful, but without a soil test I'd advise caution. Also, consider dolomite lime as a slower releasing alternative to correcting soil magnesium deficiency.
