NiteLifeExhange.com i-Spondant Sherry Eaker talks with Andre De Shields, actor, director, and choreographer, about his newest version of "Black By Popular Demand" which just finished a limited engagement at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York. Originally performed in the 1980s, the show has evolved over the years as De Shields has expanded his own philosophy of how he views life and the artist's responsibility, which is the basis of the discussion between Eaker and De Shields.
An unparalleled and completely diverse performer, De Shields has performed on Broadway (Hair,The Wiz, Ain't Misbehavin', Stardust, Play On!. The Full Monty, Prymate); Off Broadway (Dream on Monkey Mountain, Caligula, King Lear, Black Nativity, and Archbishop Tartuffe Supreme); regional theatre; television; film; and both the concert and cabaret stage. De Shields serves as an adjunct professor at NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study, and is a distinguished visiting professor at colleges and universities across the nation.
