Earth Celebrations, Art, Community and Environmental Action for a Sustainable City

Earth Celebrations, Art, Community and Environmental Action for a Sustainable City is a documentary featuring Earth Celebrations' pioneering creative placemaking and cultural organizing projects including the Procession to Save our Gardens (1991-2005), applying the arts to engage community and build a grassroots coalition effort that led to the preservation of hundreds of community gardens on the Lower East Side and through out New York City. Earth Celebrations then applied these successful cultural strategies to engage community of restoration efforts and climate impacts on the waterfront with the Hudson River Restoration Pageant (2008-2012). Earth Celebrations expanded its creative efforts within a global context initiating the Vaigai River Restoration Project & Pageant (2014-2016), an international collaborative effort to restore the Vaigai River in Madurai South India, in crisis due pollution, waste dumping and drying effects of climate change. The Project led to the establishment of a Trust for the restoration of the river and an ongoing clean up and waterfront restoration initiative.
EARTH CELEBRATIONS is a non-profit organization founded in 1991on the Lower East Side of New York City by local action artist Felicia Young on the Lower East Side of New York City, to apply the arts to build community, collaboration and action on environmental issues and solutions. For the past 30 years, Earth Celebrations' pioneering cultural strategies have engaged community and mobilized action on climate change, coastal resiliency, river-waterfront restoration, water quality, species and habitat conservation, waste management and the preservation of community gardens, parks, and a healthy urban environment. Through collaborative arts projects Earth Celebrations cultivates diverse sector engagement bringing together environmental organizations, academic and cultural institutions, municipalities, government agencies, schools, community centers, artists and local residents to work together, mobilize action, develop solutions and achieve common goals.
