Gusty Winds batter the heavily laden MSC Istanbul as she departs Felixstowe. 25th March 2023

MSC Istanbul draught 14.85 metres for her next port of Algeciras.

As the wind was gusting up to 30 knots it was safer to have 4 tugs. The pilot decided to delay sailing with hope the peak of the wind would pass and reduce slightly

Svitzer Kent centre lead aft
Svitzer Sky starboard quarter
Svitzer Shotley starboard shoulder
Svitzer Deben centre lead forward

The pilot gave intentions that he would be using all tugs at maximum power.
After the Shotley makes fast, the Sky makes fast. Shortly after the Kent makes fast aft then Deben makes fast forward. All back away and gets ready for the pull off the berth. Offshore lines were slackened then the rest of the lines were let go. Springs were the last lines to be released.
Shotley and Sky goes straight on at 50% then the two centre lead tugs go straight on at 50% aswell. The Istanbul slightly moves off the berth and then the pilot soon increases all the tugs power to full. The stern gets a little twist after the pilot reduces the aft tugs to 50% so they are increased again to full power while the forward tugs reduce slightly. After rectifying the twist, the pilot get the tugs to go back up to full power.
Steady off the berth as wind batters the starboard side pushing her back onto the berth.
Just about out of the berth box, the pilot kicks the engine ahead and a few minutes later gets the Sky to stop to come in and let go. Once let go they come around the stern to the port side near the bridge for a full push. Few minutes later the Shotley stops and comes in to let go then comes around the bow to the port quarter and pushes full power to help the Kent.

Sky and Shotley back away and hangs around near berth 9 just incase. Deben goes straight ahead at full power then comes in to let go. Once let go the Deben comes around to port quarter for push indirect
Sky and Shotley are stood down few minutes later.
With headway Increasing the pilot gets the Deben to push up at full power for a push indirect with the Kent moving out onto the starboard side for a powered indirect.
As the power increases the Kent shows an incredible angle while going out for the powered indirect.
