COASTAL TITAN cranes industrial boilers onto barge RADIUM 604, at Wharf 2, Welland Canal, 2018

2 large industrial boilers arrived at Wharf 2, Welland Canal, July 3, 2018. They were brought in by truck on heavy duty trailers, from the nearby Trenergy factory, and I believe they were destined to be shipped by barge to Chicago. On the scene were the heavy lift barge COASTAL TITAN, powered by the tug RADIUM YELLOWKNIFE, and the barge RADIUM 604, propelled by the tug M R KANE.
The task at hand was for COASTAL TITAN's cranes to lift each boiler unit off its trailer, and then to lower the unit onto the deck of the barge RADIUM 604.
The procedure was for the crane to lift the unit and keep it suspended.
Then, COASTAL TITAN moved away from the wall, while keeping parallel to the wall, and still holding the unit suspended in the air, leaving a gap in the water between TITAN and the wall.
Then, the barge RADIUM 604 moved into the gap, and after careful alignment, the unit was lowered onto the deck and secured.
Then, RADIUM 640 was reversed back along the wall, allowing TITAN to return to the wall, and get the 2nd unit lifted.
And the same procedure followed: TITAN moves way, while holding the unit suspended, then RADIUM 604 moves into the gap and the unit is lowered onto the barge deck.
Essentially COASTAL TITAN was used as a portable crane unit, as there is no heavy duty permanent crane at Wharf 2. Was interesting to see, but it took almost a day to get all this done, as there were at least three ships that passed by, each time causing a waiting period before the procedure could continue: the loads would swing a bit as ships passed by, so they'd wait for things to settle down.
The vessels that made their cameo appearance here were the upbound ALGOMA ENTERPRISE, the ST MARYS CEMENT II barge and tug, and the downbound ALGOMA SAULT.
Interestingly, ALGOMA SAULT was a BRAND NEW ship at the time: she had just arrived in Canada in early 2018, and made her Maiden Voyage on the Welland Canal on Apr. 26, 2018 - - - so, she was still less than 3 months old, as seen here!!
And also, we have a great appearance by the mighty ALGOMA ENTERPRISE, heading upbound towards Lock 1, seen on a typical service run, in her mature prime. Little did we know she had less than two years left in her service life: she would be retired at the end of 2020, and was scrapped in Port Colborne in 2021. So again - a slice of the typical up and down stories along the Welland Canal.
Thank you all, who watch my channel.
