How Real Is Mindhunter?

The Netflix series Mindhunter, which is based on the book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit follows FBI agents as they try to take a look inside the minds of serial killers. The two agents at the center of the show are fictional, but they are both based on real people, and a lot of the show’s details are painstakingly accurate to real life. Obviously, creative liberties have to be taken with any show or movie that is based on a true story, but how closely does Mindhunter follow the real life events?
