Nihal was the 2014 World Under-10 Champion, winning the title ahead of several talented peers in Durban, South Africa.[3] In 2015, he came close to winning the Under-12 championship in Porto Carras, Greece but had to settle for silver on the tiebreak.[4] In the 2016 edition in Batumi, Georgia, Nihal tied for the second place, settling for the fourth position on the tiebreak.[5]

Nihal is a noted speed-chess specialist and is a key member of Team Delhi Dynamite in the inaugural edition of Chess.com's PRO Chess League 2017.
