Shoemaker's workshop: Finishing machine

The workshop of the former master shoemaker from Paderborn was taken over in 2016 and installed in a building on the museum grounds. A film team accompanied the master shoemaker during the last working week in his workshop. The resulting film clips show some of the activities in the workshop. The master shoemaker also explains how he uses the various tools and machines.
finishing machine
In this clip he works on the finishing machine. It was made in the 1950s. It is still the central tool in a shoemaker's workshop. It was used for sharpening and milling heels and soles, and for polishing leather shoes. With its help, the shoemaker can grind and mill heels and soles, and after repairing the finished shoes, clean and polish them. The machine ensures that he can carry out these tasks faster than by hand: cleaning by hand takes 70 to 90 minutes, with a machine it takes just 15 minutes!
