Stuck in the Middle? Here are some tips for taking your watercolor painting from start to finish.
So often I hear from students who find themselves getting lost in the middle stages of a painting. They have no problem starting with a loose foundation wash, but to take the painting to a completed sense is a struggle. Here are some tips for enjoying the middle stages of a painting.
Note: I don't always know when to stop when I'm painting, and sometimes my paintings get overworked, sometimes I fuss with an area that would have been more beautiful soft and simple. It happens! The important thing to remember is that when you go too far, you are teaching yourself where to set your boundaries.
The finished version of the painting is more detailed at top than I had planned, and the foliage at bottom got a bit heavier than I would have liked. In the end, I was able to explore a new technique for bringing back some light into the foliage, and the finished painting reflects that small breakthrough. Every painting teaches you something, whether it turns out well or not!
