Build Your Own Strong DIY Paper Bridge | UniLab | UniLand Kids

Welcome to the #UniLab, UniLand’s very own science show, that explores the wonders of the Universe. Move over Bill Nye the Science Guy, there are new scientists in town! We’ll be breaking down some complicated #STEM and #STEAM lessons by doing our own #DIY experiments and explorations, perfect for you to do at home or show off at your school science fairs! So grab those safety goggles and have an adult nearby so we can visit the UniLab.

🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴TENSION 🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴

✍🏼OBJECTIVES📝

Students will be able to do the following:
• Define Tension ✅
• Understand the different types of bridges that exist in the world. ✅
• Create their own mini bridge that can be used to hold up heavy coins. ✅

😳WHAT IS TENSION?😱

How do bridges hold all those people, cars, and animals above ground? And how does it hold itself up when it’s so heavy? 😮 🤔

There are over half a million bridges across America 🇺🇸 today that people rely on to cross streams 💧, valley ⛰️, and oceans🌊. But did you know that since ancient times, engineers have designed three major types of bridges to withstand the force of nature and the pull of gravity???

Nowadays there are four major types of bridges:
☑️ Beam Bridges which are made of horizontal beams supported by piers at each end.
☑️ Truss Bridges made from a combination of triangles made of steel.
☑️ Arch Bridges that are made up of arches supporting the bridge that are naturally strong due to it’s shape
☑️ Suspension Bridges that are long bridges, like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, that work with a little something call tension.

💥Tension💥 means pulling something tight. So suspension bridges are made of decks that are suspended or hung with thick cables that stretch from one side of the bridge to the other. The cables are supported by huge towers and anchored down, or held tightly, on both ends. 👫

Suspension bridges are strong because the weight is spread out through all of its pieces. So when people, animals, or vehicles travel on suspension bridges, they create tension that pulls on the towers and anchors on either side to keep it upright.

💪Let’s investigate 🤔 the science behind bridges a little further! 💪

➡️➡️➡️💫SUPER STRONG PAPER BRIDGE💫⬅️⬅️⬅️

INGREDIENTS:
• 10 Sheets of construction paper or printer paper 📜
• Stack of books (or paper) that are roughly the same size 📚
• 30 or more coins 💰
• Tape 👍🏼
• Ruler 📏

RECIPE:
• Divide your stack of books (or paper) in two.
• Place one half of the stack on one side of your table and measure exactly 10 inches to place your other stack.
• Make sure each stack is equal so your bridge is perfectly balanced.
• Put one sheet of paper on top of the stack with one edge on each stack.
• Place a coin directly in the middle.
• Notice that the paper bridge falls under the weight of the coin.
• Fold the paper (starting with the longest side) up like an accordian and make three folds.
• Use tape to fasten the very edge of each side.
• Now begin distributing the coins by placing one coin on each side slowly.
• See how many coins you can put on your bridge. And use the other papers to test out new designs.

👩🏼‍🏫LESSON REVIEW 😜
