Niamh Moloney - ‘Ever Closer’ Financial Union? And if not, What?

About the Speech:

In her address Professor Moloney speculated as to the appropriate role of the EU in regulating financial markets in the wake of the seismic crisis-era reforms, and in light of current Capital Market Union developments, and the prospect of tensions between the euro area and the single market.

She suggested that while reforms remain necessary, a period of ‘tinkering under the bonnet’ rather than of ‘grand designs’ is required. She called for a stronger commitment to institutional reform, as well as to robust rule supervision and enforcement, and suggested that a focus on the household investor – long the Cinderella of this area – is long overdue.

About the Speaker:

Niamh Moloney is Professor of Financial Markets Law in the Law Department of the London School of Economics and Political Science. She specializes in EU financial market regulation and has written the first book on this topic (EC Securities Regulation, Oxford University Press, now in its third edition (2014)). Niamh has published widely on EU financial market regulation, including a recent book on EU investor protection law and policy in the wake of the financial crisis (How to Protect Investors: Lessons from the EC and the UK, Cambridge University Press (2010)).
