I actually recommend either the WDTV LIVE or the Roku 3. The mkv video streaming isn't as good as the WDTV Live and the apps aren't as good as the Roku 3.

The WDTV Play is aimed at the value market. It doesn't have the same codec support as the WDTV Live. If you want it for the apps the Play is better because has a faster CPU.. If you want it for streaming your videos the play is better.

Things I liked
Speed is better than the WD TV Live. I'd say it's about 30% faster. Just what it needed.
Video play back from a USB hard drive worked great and quality was very good. Format support is excellent on the Western Digital TV boxes. The best available.
The new remote is perfect. Just the right size and just the right amount of buttons to be useful. Also the new remote can control the older WD TV boxes.
Lots of apps. Plus the ability to organize the apps is very nice. You can pick which apps go on which screen and put all your favorites on one page. Or you can put them all on one page, it's up to you. Also the programmable app launcher buttons on the remote are great!
Netflix on here the Image quality is excellent!
Problems
I think these things will all be fixed with a firmware update.
I couldn't get network payback to play on my password protected network. My old WD TV Live let me enter a username and password and everything worked great. I'm certain this is a glitch in the software because I had it happen on the Live when I first got it too.
Apps aren't 100% working. I couldn't see photos on facebook. YouTube couldn't play a some videos. Also it has the version of YouTube that you pretty much have to use your smart phone as a remote and use YouTube Lean Back to play. Other apps had glitches too. Luckily Netflix works awesome.
The zoom while watching a mkv video is not working properly. Its zooms in but doesn't make the video with bars fit to the screen. This is a must. I'm sure all these things will be fixed with a firmware update.
