Why Manufacturing Is India’s Next Big Growth Engine | NAMTalks | NAMTECH
Manufacturing is set to drive India’s next phase of economic growth, more than the service sector.
In this episode of NAMTalks, we explore why manufacturing, especially smart manufacturing, is critical to India’s future, and how MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) will play a defining role in this journey. While India’s service sector has seen strong growth, the next major opportunity lies in strengthening the country’s manufacturing ecosystem.
India is home to nearly 3–4 lakh MSMEs, forming the backbone of its manufacturing industry. However, many of these enterprises are yet to adopt Industry 4.0, automation, digital manufacturing, and smart factory practices. The real challenge is not the lack of technology, it is the lack of skilled manpower that understands smart manufacturing systems and can enable this transformation at scale.
Large organisations already possess advanced manufacturing technologies, proven across tier‑one and tier‑two customers. The real need is professionals who can take these solutions to MSMEs across India; assess existing processes, implement smart manufacturing solutions, and support the transition from traditional manufacturing to technology‑driven, efficient operations.
This is where smart manufacturing education becomes essential.
India needs a new generation of engineers and professionals who are industry‑ready, manufacturing‑literate, and capable of working across automation, digitalisation, process optimisation, and manufacturing systems. These professionals will be key to driving productivity, competitiveness, and long‑term growth within India’s manufacturing sector.
From a career perspective, this presents a massive opportunity. Manufacturing careers, particularly in smart manufacturing and advanced manufacturing, are becoming increasingly important as India focuses on Make in India, Skill India, and building a self‑reliant manufacturing economy.
This conversation highlights why manufacturing education, industry‑academia collaboration, and skill development must work together to close the talent gap and support India’s industrial growth.
