As they restart war on Gaza, the US & Israel are seen as the real ‘axes of evil’: Marwan Bishara

Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, dissected the Israeli government’s recent military escalation in Gaza, linking it to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s military, strategic, and personal agendas. Militarily, Netanyahu has repeatedly stated his intent to "end Hamas and effectively Gaza," leaving no room for surprise. Strategically, Bishara argued that the escalation aligns with proposals to displace Gaza’s population, noting, "No such transfer is possible without war." Politically, he highlighted Netanyahu’s need to "coalesce his coalition" after recent setbacks and to deflect from his ongoing corruption trial.
Bishara sharply criticised the US administration, accusing it of being "taken by its own rhetoric" and supporting Netanyahu’s "genocidal war in Gaza." He condemned the US for bypassing Congress and the UN Security Council, warning that such actions risk destabilising the region. Bishara also emphasised the growing international backlash, citing France’s condemnation of Israel’s bombardment as a violation of international law.
He underscored the shifting perceptions in the Arab world, stating, "For the absolute majority of the Arab and Muslim world, it is not Iran and Houthis that are seen primarily as an axis of evil, but rather Israel and the United States." Bishara warned that continued US and Israeli policies risk igniting upheaval, as seen in the past, and could severely undermine US interests in the region.
