HUGE BROWN BEAR AT 8 YARDS!! RECURVE BOW SUCCESS HUNTING BEARS IN ALASKA!!

Whomever said bear baiting is easy obviously has no idea. We strategically put this bait in an area no one else would dare go. A mountain so steep and so mean it was nicknamed Murder Mountain. Not only because we thought we would have success while hunting it but it was murder on the legs, lungs and our backs to get up it. Climbing the mountain with no weight on your back is a feat, but fully loaded with barrels, tree stands and enough food to feed grizzlies, that is insanity. But we knew going in that the reward was worth the pain.

After getting the bait setup and the tree stand hung wait wanted for the first hit. It took about a week for the bears to find the goodies but after that it was game on! Every morning and night bears would be hitting the bait and now we just had to be there when they showed up! Mike and I sat in the tree stand first and about an hour into the sit here comes a huge brown bear! My heart was beating out of my chest and I was shaking so much I could barely get the camera on. The bear came within 8 yards of Mike and just then I knew it was time for a shot...

A couple days after the encounter with the grizzlies, I headed up Murder Mountain on a solo mission. Starting out this bear season I had set a goal to kill a bear with my recurve. If successful it would be my first animal that I would harvest with traditional archery. Once I made it to my bait I could immediately tell I was in for some action. The barrel was half buried by bears and the logs and surrounding area had been completely tore up. I looked as if a skid steer had came through to do some excavation. I had been sitting for about 30 minutes and saw a flash of black on the hill across from me. A nice black bear came into view and starred cautiously at the barrel. He must have known that there were big brown bears in the area and didn't want to become dinner. Once he saw the coast was clear he slowly made his way down to the barrel. It took about 15 minutes to make his way as he would stop and sniff the air to be certain he was in the clear. He finally made it to the barrel and I slowly drew back my bow... and let the arrow loose! Thwhakkk!!
