The plains have fertile lands that are drained by rivers.
Large part of agricultural activity is done on the fertile plains.
The plateaus are mainly rich in mineral deposits and covered by light-textured soils.
The plateaus quickly suffer from drought.
That’s why Plateau regions in India do not support agriculture as much as the plain regions.
7. What are the similarities and differences between Eastern coastal plains and western coastal plains? (AS1)
Similarities:
Both Coastal plains are stretching from North to South.
Both Coastal plains are receiving abundant rainfall during south west monsoons.
East and west coastal plains are extending between the sea and mountain ranges.
Both East and West coastal plains covered with fertile soil.
Differences:
In eastern coastal plains there are river deltas, whereas in West coastal plains there are no river deltas.
East coastal plain is wider than West coastal plain.
East coastal plain has lakes like Kolleru, Chilka and Pulicat, Whereas West coastal plain has no lakes but it has lagoons and back waters.
East coastal plain has better irrigational facilities than West coastal plains.
East coastal plain is wider and flat. West coastal plain is narrow and uneven.
The East coastal plain is famous for food crops. The West coastal plain is famous for cash crops.
8. Contrast the relief of the Himalayan region with that of the peninsular plateau. (AS1)
The Indian plateau is slightly tilted towards east.
The Deccan plateau is a triangular landmass.
Satpura range forms the Deccan plateau’s north edge.
The plateau consists of two divisions namely, Malwa and Deccan.
Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats and Nilgiris form western, eastern and southern boundaries to the Deccan plateau.
The eastern edge of Deccan plateau is Mahadev range.
3. Write about Eastern Ghats and western Ghats. (AS1)
The Eastern Ghats extends from Mahanadi valley to Nilgiris.
The highest peak in Eastern Ghats is Aroya Konda found at Chinthapalli near Visakhapatnam.
Nallamalas, Velikondas, Palakondas and Seshachala are the tracts of Eastern Ghats.
The Western Ghats lie parallel to the west coast.
The Western Ghats are higher than Eastern Ghats.
The Nilgiris joins the Western Ghats near Gudalur.
Dodda Betta is the highest peak in Nilgiris.
The average height of the Eastern Ghats 900 mts.
4. If the Himalayas would have not been in its present position how would be the climatic conditions of the Indian sub continent? (AS1)
The Himalayas play a very significant role influencing the climatic conditions of India.
The Himalayas cause precipitation in the form of rain and snow.
In absence of Himalayas there is no possibility for tropical monsoon type of climate.
The absence of Himalayas may tend India to become a tropical desert.
Besides, they prevent the cold air masses of central Asia from entering into India.
In this way the Himalayas play very significant role on the climatic conditions of India.
5. How the Himalayas influences Indian agriculture? (AS1)
Indo - Gangetic plain is very fertile with the fine Alluvial brought by rivers.
The great rivers carry alluvium from the Himalayas.
They are suitable for growing variety of crops.
Himalayas serve water for irrigation being the birth places of perennial rivers.
The Himalayan slopes offer terraced cultivation.
