"Clay Pigeons" (Blaze Foley)

Here is my cover of the classic Blaze Foley song, “Clay Pigeons”. I have to admit that Clay Foley fell beneath my radar screen until one of my young students, Memphis, brought him to my attention with this exact song. (Note: Memphis also has a songwriting and guitar picking Dad). Anyway, I did some research on Blaze and listened to most of his recorded output.

Foley was born Michael David Fuller in Malvern, Arkansas on December 18, 1949 and died at the age of 39 after being shot in Austin, Texas on February 1st, 1989. Foley never obtained widespread fame while alive and wandered around the Country quite a bit spending a lot of time in West Georgia in Carroll County, Austin Texas, Chicago and places in between.

Since his death Foley has become a legend and his heartfelt music as endured. “Clay Pigeons” is one of his most popular songs and is one of the best written about heartbroken times. Blaze Foley was a very good friend of Townes Van Zandt as well as other Austin based songwriters. My cover of “Clay Pigeons” is based on Foley’s own version but I did change “Texas” to “Georgia” to make it more personal. I don’t think Blaze would mind since he spent a lot of time here in Georgia.
Be sure to check out Blaze’s own recording and video of “Clay Pigeons”. Other good covers include the Avett Brothers and John Prine. If you are not familiar with Blaze Foley….start listening….he was surely an excellent artist.
