Boxing Pub (1957)

A pub with a boxing ring in the back. While the parents gather for a beer or two the youngsters learn how to fight properly. See here footage from Londons only Boxing pub.

London.
High angle L/S of a bunch of boys jumping into a boxing ring. Some have boxing gloves on, some don't. Boys start boxing in pairs. A man goes into the ring to coach the boys. Panoramic shot of the 'gym' reveals that it is a part of a pub and the coach serves drinks on breaks. Boxing ring area is divided from the bar area with a glass door. Several shots of the bar and the ring - people having drinks and the boys train.
Dave McCleave, one of Britain's greatest boxers, runs the Union Tavern in South London and in its back room runs a boxing club. He trains the boys with help of his friend Tiny Ryan, former amateur featherweight champion of Great Britain. Mr McCleave has even transformed a part of the back garden into dressing rooms with showers and massage tables.
Boys are seen training in the ring. C/U shot of one of the boys, six years old Billy May. Mr Ryan observes the older boys punching a bag. Several shots showing both, younger boys in the ring coached by Mr McCleave and older ones punching the bag, coached by Mr Ryan.
Mr McCleave leaves the ring and sits next to his wife to rest a bit. He wipes the sweat off his face and breaths deeply. A bar woman is seen pouring an orange juice into a glass and taking it to Mr McCleave. He drinks it. Still very sweaty, he wipes the sweat off his face.
Two very young boys (can be between 4 and 6) are fighting. They have proper boxing shoes and gloves, there is a judge in the ring and audience is watching them - it all seems pretty official. Shots of the boys fighting are intercut with shots of the people watching. The surprising thing is that boys fight rather viciously which is accepted as normal not only by the 'boxing audience' but also by the others in the pub - women included! Disturbing watch!
