Section 6, part 1 of Quality Hide Glue From Scratch series.

The skin has been limed, fleshed, rinsed and scudded before drying. The dry pieces of hide are soaked in water, cut into pieces and cooked over low heat for many hours. Once the liquid is thick enough, it is poured out to cool in sheets. The temperature must be cool enough to set the jelly into a firm sheet that can be handled and which will not stick to itself or the drying surface. Once cool, it is cut into small pieces so that it will resoak quickly when needed. The pieces are dried and can be stored until needed when the dried hide glue is soaked in water before heating. Animal glue like this must be used while it is hot.
