Biofilters: inside the black box of treating drinking water

Over two billion people still lack access to a managed source of safe drinking water. At the University of Glasgow researchers are harnessing biofilter technology to bring safe, affordable drinking water to everyone. Biofiltration uses microorganisms to treat water, by encouraging them to eat harmful compounds, rendering the water safe for drinking. Dr Marta Vignola and colleagues specialise in researching biofilters, with the aim to make this sustainable water treatment technology widely available to all.

This video was shortlisted as the National winner for the UK in the CAETs Comms Prize 2025.
