Shubman Gill press conference today | ENG vs IND, 2nd Test at Birmingham| India Playing XI
Shubman Gill Press Conference: Key Takeaways Ahead of the 2nd Test vs England at Edgbaston
BIRMINGHAM, JULY 1 – Indian Test captain Shubman Gill addressed the media on Tuesday ahead of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. With the five-match series currently 1-0 in England’s favour, Gill shared insights into Jasprit Bumrah’s availability, possible team combinations, and India’s approach to bounce back.
Shubman confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah is fully fit and available for selection, but the final call on his inclusion will be taken after assessing the pitch closer to the match day. “Bumrah is definitely available. We will take a final look at the wicket today and then decide the combination for tomorrow,” Gill said. The team management is reportedly cautious about overworking Bumrah, who bowled over 40 overs in the first Test, and plans to rotate him across the series.
Gill clarified that there is no fixed plan to rest Bumrah for specific matches and every decision would depend on surface conditions and workload management. “We are trying to find a way to manage his workload. That’s something we are looking at very closely,” he stated. This aligns with head coach Gautam Gambhir’s earlier comments about Bumrah playing only three out of the five Tests.
Regarding the bowling combination, the Indian skipper emphasized the need to strike a balance between attack and containment. “We are trying to find the right combination where we can take 20 wickets and also score runs. It’s about adjusting to the conditions and putting pressure on the opposition,” he explained.
With the Edgbaston pitch showing signs of dryness under its green top, Gill hinted that India might consider playing two spinners. “We will decide on the spinner after seeing the final pitch, but the surface has a dry layer underneath,” he mentioned. This suggests that either Kuldeep Yadav or Washington Sundar could be brought in alongside Ravindra Jadeja, depending on the match eve inspection.
Reflecting on the Headingley defeat, where India’s bowling faded in the fourth innings, Gill admitted, “We felt in Leeds that an extra spinner would have helped control the run rate.” His comments indicate a tactical reassessment in terms of fielding combinations for the second Test.
When asked about managing expectations with a few players potentially missing out due to workload management, Gill remained confident. “It is difficult, but not impossible. We have picked the best 15–16 players in India and any of them can do the job. Even without Bumrah, we can compete and win overseas.”
India will finalise its playing XI based on conditions and fitness checks later in the evening. The team is aiming to level the series with a more disciplined and balanced performance at Edgbaston.
Shubman Gill’s calm and composed demeanour during the press conference reflected a leader who is aware of the pressure but remains focused on strategic clarity. With the second Test set to begin on July 2, all eyes will be on India’s playing XI and how they respond to England’s Bazball momentum.
