Geoff Bailey introduces Carronades

Museums are about objects and what these objects tell us about past ways of life. Geoff Bailey, archaeologist and curator, introduces the new exhibition at Callendar House.

A carronade is a short range cannon with a large bore and high muzzle velocity. The idea was conceived by General Robert Melville in the 1770s, but it was Carron Company that undertook the practical development and introduced other innovative features, putting it at the forefront of the arms race. In this clip, Geoff tells us about the development of the cannon, its use and the impact on not just the Falkirk people, but also the greater world.

This exhibition at Callendar House features just two handfuls of objects – well 10½ to be exact. It is Geoff's personal choice and someone else undertaking the task would undoubtedly make a different selection. What would you choose? Exhibition opens 26th January until 4th May 2019.
