"The way that I ended up in public safety was I either had to get a job or go to school between my senior year of high school and my freshman year of college. And an EMT program fit perfectly into my summertime plans. On my very first class I came home and told my mother that I was not going to OU. That I was going to become a firefighter paramedic and four-years later I had progressed in my fire and EMS education and also graduated from OU. So, we came to a consensus that I could do both.

You hear from people that I got into this because I want to help people, I want to do this, I want to do that, I want to make a difference. That isn't the reason why I got into this, but this is the reason I've spent the last 25 years doing this. I feel blessed that the public in my city allows me to come to work and do my job. And that's rewarding for me. So, while I might have started my career off because I was a lazy 18-year old that didn't want to get a job, I've stayed in my career because I find it to be the most rewarding profession that I could imagine."
