Slovakian PM in ‘serious but stable’ condition after shooting

Slovakia’s prime minister Robert Fico was said to be in a serious but stable condition after being shot several times in an assassination attempt.

He is believed to have been hit by at least three bullets, in the abdomen and arm, as he spoke to voters in Handlova, a town 80 miles northeast of the capital Bratislava. He was bundled into a car by his security team and taken to hospital.

Initially Robert Kalinak, the defence minister, said Fico’s condition was extraordinarily serious and he was fighting for his life, but after an operation on Wednesday night his wounds were no longer thought to be life-threatening, although they were complicated.
