Bishop Steven calls for stronger AI governance and human-centred digital policy

In this House of Lords speech, the Bishop of Oxford calls for clearer legislation, ethical oversight, and a balanced approach to innovation and responsibility.

Bishop Steven highlights both visible and emerging threats facing the UK, with a particular focus on the rapid development of artificial intelligence. While acknowledging its potential benefits, he raises significant concerns about risks to employment, mental health, public discourse, truth, and safety (especially for women, children, and young people). Bishop Steven also criticises the lack of robust government policy on online safety and AI regulation, warning that profit-driven technology companies risk undermining human dignity.

Finally, he welcomes proposed reforms to special educational needs provision, emphasising the need to ensure that the digital environment supports the flourishing of every child.
