Leukerbad, Swiss Mineral Spring Spa Town

Leukerbad is nestled in a box canyon of soaring mountains in the Valais Canton of Switzerland. Accessible by car or bus, the town is at 4,600’. In the winter there is skiing behind the surrounding cliffs, in the summer there is hiking and mountain biking. But the most unique aspect of Leukerbad is the natural thermal mineral waters.

The Gemmi cable car takes one up to the Gemmi Pass, historically the route between the Valais and Bern. From the top of the pass at 7,600 feet, the views of the Alps are awe-inspiring. Here one can take hiking trails to the Daubensee Lake, picnic there or have lunch at the at the cable car restaurant.

The village of Leukerbad has a couple of thousand year-round residents. There are accommodation options from five-star hotels to bed and breakfasts as well as many apartment rentals. There are some excellent wining and dining options, especially the Waldhaus hotel and restaurant where in the spring and summer juicy white asparagus are on the menu.

Other specialties include croute au formage with ham and egg and rosti potatoes.
