What do COVID-19 and the Black Death have in common? What do they teach us? Shay Nair Sharma, a junior at Stanford University studying Human Biology with a Concentration in Space Medicine, traces the incredible similarities between COVID-19 and the Black Death plague, specifically the resilience and selfless actions of healthcare heroes both then and now. Shay Nair Sharma is a junior at Stanford University currently studying Human Biology with a Concentration in Space Medicine. He is fascinated with the past and future of medicine and has a passion for research, community service, and advocacy. He has pursued his passion for scientific discovery as a researcher in a Bioengineering lab and an intern for NASA. At Stanford, he is the Health and Wellness Leader for the Class of 2025. Shay writes an article series highlighting nuggets of advice from his conversations with retired Sacramento Valley physicians after lifetime careers of service. He is an advocate for children as a Camp Kesem counselor, leading a camp for children who have a parent battling cancer and as Founder of Cards 4 Kids, an organization that spreads the joy of trading cards with patients at children's hospitals across North America. In his spare time he enjoys calligraphy, cooking, Taekwondo, and exploring the outdoors.
