My Year in Serbia: Becoming an Illustrator and Accidental Entrepreneur | Emma Fick | TEDxZemunED

From September 30th 2014 to September 30th 2015, I somehow went from being a twenty-something American girl spending a year or two abroad between university and graduate school to being a full-time self-supporting freelance illustrator, a published author, and an entrepreneur with no intentions of returning to the traditional higher education system. Something in Serbian culture allowed me to relax about the logistical specifics while maintaining my big-picture vision of travel illustration, and in that more relaxed state of mind, I was ironically able to accomplish much more than in the rigid American system which paralyzed me creatively. Here's the story of how I accidentally became an entrepreneur, and how bits and pieces of Serbian wisdom helped me get there.

Born and raised in Covington, Louisiana; received BA in English Literature and Art History from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. In October 2014, began the "Snippets of Serbia" illustration project as part of a grant from the U.S. Embassy in Serbia. In June 2015, she published her first book of illustrations: "Snippets of Serbia." Today, she is enjoying working on this original project, promoting "Snippets of Serbia" in Serbia and abroad. Her near future plans are to keep travelling and meeting new interesting people and culture.
