(NAFS نَفْس)

It represents the inner self that can incline toward good or evil.

Nafs al-Ammarah (The commanding self) – urges evil

Nafs al-Lawwamah (The self-reproaching soul) – feels guilt after wrongdoing

Nafs al-Mutma'innah (The tranquil soul) – at peace and close to God
Nafs al-Ammārah (النفس الأمارة بالسوء) – The Commanding Self

Description: This is the lowest level of the soul.

Characteristics: Urges toward evil, selfishness, lust, greed, pride.

Needs: Discipline and purification (tazkiyah).

Example: A person who follows their desires without thinking of right or wrong.
