Filming in the Caribbean heat, wearing heavy period costumes and corsets, was physically intense. Knightley said the costume department would pour water over her head between takes to keep her from fainting. Yet she kept up with the rest of the cast, even performing many of her own stunts, including sword fighting and leaping off ledges.
The Curse of the Black Pearl became a surprise smash hit, and Keira Knightley shot to international fame overnight. Her performance as Elizabeth helped redefine the "pirate princess" archetype—not just a love interest, but a clever and powerful figure in her own right.

She would go on to star in two more Pirates films (Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End), and return briefly in Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).
