The first play of Jacoby's first start

Sept. 20, 1981: Joe Jacoby, then a little-known free-agent tackle out of Louisville, gets his first NFL start at St. Louis in week 3. Jacoby is at left guard in this game, filling in for the injured Russ Grimm.

The play actually ends in disaster for the Redskins. Running back Wilbur Jackson gets loose outside but fumbles after gaining nine yards.

However if you look closely before the turnover, you'll see Jacoby pull out and nail a guy, sending him downfield and allowing Jackson to run by untouched. Jacoby's victim was Cardinals inside linebacker Charles Baker, and Jacoby would continue to torment him in the ground game before the Redskins fell way behind and had to pass constantly.

Nevertheless, Jacoby's start marked the beginning of a major turnaround for the Redskins running attack. From the September 21, 1981 Washington Post story about the game:

"Washington, which had aggregated only 109 yards on the ground in the first two games, opened in a one-back (Wilbur Jackson), two-tight-end offense which provided an extra blocker at the corners.

Most of the Redskins' 133 running yards came around the left side of the offensive line where rookies Mark May and Joe Jacoby (in his first NFL start) were playing."
