The Celtics-Lakers Rivalry Trilogy: The Rematch | NBA 2K Classics: Year 2010

The 1990s were an extraordinary decade globally, but for the Celtics and Lakers, it was a time of searching for new stars to carry on the rivalry left behind by Bird and Magic.

For the Celtics, it was a prolonged period of rebuilding after the collapse of the Big 3. Despite drafting Len Bias and having Reggie Lewis emerge as a star, both tragically passed away, leaving the team unable to regain its competitive edge. The Lakers, on the other hand, took a different path, acquiring a young Kobe Bryant and later Shaquille O'Neal, which led to their eventual three-peat championship run.

Two decades after the legendary Bird-Magic era dominated television, the rivalry was reignited for the third time. The Lakers, perennial playoff contenders, were led by a more efficient Bryant, who consistently played at an MVP level and finally secured the award in 2008. Meanwhile, the Celtics made a significant turnaround by acquiring Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, forming a new Big Three. This move paid off, as they led the Eastern Conference and triumphed in the 2008 Finals against the Lakers, reigniting the rivalry in the modern era.

Two years later, the Celtics and Lakers met again in what would become an iconic rematch. The series was fiercely contested, going to a decisive Game 7, where the Lakers ultimately prevailed over the Big Three Celtics.
