EU Commission Slips up on Alex Pretti Comment
This clip is an excerpt from the European Commission Midday Press Briefing (26 January 2026).
This is an edited (transformative) version of the European Commission Press conference, created to improve accessibility. Edits that add transformative value include cutting repetition, silences, and stutters; restructuring the content by theme and topic; adding on-screen context; and enhancing video and audio quality. This edited version does not distort the meaning or message of the original video.
A journalist asks whether the EU has any reaction to a reported second death of a US citizen (Alex Pretti) involving federal agents (ICE) in Minneapolis. The Commission spokesperson replies that no comment will be made on what is described as a US internal matter. The spokesperson adds a general statement deploring any loss of life, while stressing that it is not for the EU to judge the circumstances of the case.
In a follow-up exchange, the journalist asks the spokesperson to clarify whether the phrase “loss of innocent life” applies in this situation. The spokesperson reiterates that the Commission’s position is a general regret over any life lost, and underlines that it is for the US justice system to establish the facts.
Chapters:
00:00 Question on Minneapolis incident
00:07 Commission: no comment
00:16 Follow-up on wording
00:26 Clarification: facts for US justice

Edits applied by Europe Echo (transformative value add): repetition, silences, and stutters removed; content restructured by theme so questions and answers stay together and topics remain organised (some sections may be reordered to separate topics more clearly); on-screen context and detailed descriptions added (topic labels, chapters, captions) to make long briefings easier to follow; and video/audio quality enhanced (cropping, splicing the correct audio-language tracks, voice isolation, and colour correction).
